“The use of antibiotics in farm animals is continuing to decline; set new benchmark values”

“The Authority for Veterinary Medicinal Products (SDa) presents the report ‘The use of antibiotics in farm animals in 2017’. Almost all sectors have succeeded in further reducing the use of antibiotics compared to 2016. On the basis of the daily doses of animals, the use of antibiotics in the turkey sector (23.7%), the broiler sector (7.8%), the veal sector (3.6%) and the pig sector (1.9%) will decrease compared to 2016. The use of antibiotics in the cattle sector is increasing slightly. The use of third choice agents, specifically fluoroquinolones and 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporines, will again be very low in the monitored sectors in 2017. Based on the kilograms of antibiotics sold, the reduction in the use of antibiotics in 2017 was 63.4% compared to 2009.”
